Welcome To 2020! I love the beginning of a new year. It always brings the promise of a fresh start, a chance to make new choices and improve upon the results of the previous year. We can make healthier choices, better financial decisions, or decide to put our time and energy into more meaningful projects. In short, we have a chance to live more vibrantly than we did last year.
The first step in realizing your most vibrant life is defining your overall intention for the New Year. For instance, you might want to enjoy a healthier body, open a small business, have complete financial security, or all of the above. Take a moment to think about the area you most want to improve at this point in your life and allow yourself to create a clear picture in your mind of how your life would look if that area of your life were absolutely ideal. For example, if your vision for Ideal Health is to have a fit body and plenty of energy, get a clear picture of exactly how you would feel, how much you would weigh, what you would be wearing, etc.
The next step is to create a clear, focused goal to make your vision a reality. Unlike an intention, a goal is specific and measurable in space and time. How much? By when? Without this clarity, your goal will have no urgency or momentum.
“S.M.A.R.T.”. This acronym stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time bound.
This means your goal is clear and defined. It is not arbitrary or subjective.
Measurable- If your intention is “physical fitness”. This can have entirely different meanings for different individuals. One person may feel that losing 50 lbs. and having the stamina to run one mile every day will accomplish their physical fitness goal. For another person, running 10 miles a day and finishing a marathon in 4.5 hours is the ultimate measure of fitness.
The goal needs to be something you can actually achieve. For example, losing 20 pounds in three days is not an achievable goal.
Make sure your goals are aligned with your overall values.
Set a specific date for the completion of your goal, a deadline gives it focus and urgency.
Here are a few examples of intentions turned into measurable goals:
Intention: Own a vacation home somewhere warm.
Goal: I will own a 2-bedroom condo in Naples, Florida by January 1, of next year.
Intention: Make a difference in education.
Goal: I will conduct a one-day leadership-training workshop for teachers in Hartford, Connecticut by January 20 of next year.
Take some time today to picture what you truly want as this beautiful New Year opens, and give yourself the gift of a life that brings you more joy.
