Improve Your Mental State with Food

August 16, 2018

Yes, you have heard about the Mind-Body connection. Perhaps you have even seen studies on the power the mind has to heal the body or the effect that an unhealthy body can have on our mental state, the two are inextricably linked. Want to know what you can do to improve your mental state and increasing physical comfort? Let’s start with better dietary choices.

When we make choices that diminish our physical wellbeing, whether by forgoing proper sleep, failing to set aside time for sufficient exercise, or eating foods that take a toll on our bodies, our mental state suffers. We feel lethargic. Our brains are foggy. Those feelings can be reduced when we nurture our bodies by removing and avoiding foods that increase inflammation and replacing them with those that reduce it. As we lower inflammation, we enjoy a clearer mental state with which to set goals and have greater energy reserves to draw on as we take action to reach them.  This can make more difference than most people realize, within only a few weeks.

Here are some handy lists you can print and take with you to the store:

Inflammatory Foods

These are the seven most common inflammation-causing foods. Of course not everyone will experience identical reactions, but eliminating these from your diet for at least two weeks is a great place to start. Most of my clients report amazing results after only 2 weeks. They report weight loss, higher energy levels, clearer skin, brain fog lifting, not to mention digestive ease they were not aware was possible, and more. When they add these foods back one by one, they immediately see the effect that particular food was having on them.

  • wheat

  • dairy

  • corn

  • soy

  • sugar

  • peanuts

  • eggs

So, what should you eat? Try some of the items on this list:

  • spinach and green leafy vegetables

    • Not only will these give you energy and aid digestion, they can even help fight cancer!

  • Turmeric

  • coconut oil

    • Protip: Coffee has tons of antioxidants in it. If you enjoy a cup once in a while, add a spoonful of coconut oil to your mug. It will slow the absorption of the coffee and the release of caffeine for a milder experience that will last longer without a crash.

  • blueberries

  • broccoli

  • green tea

    • This is so easy to add to your diet by mixing it in other things. Just buy some organic matcha powder and throw a spoonsful in a smoothie or mix it into your salad dressing

  • garlic

  • spinach

  • all berries

  • avocado
