Finding Freedom in Organization

April 12, 2018

Earlier this month people all over the world celebrated both Passover and Easter. These holidays both celebrate new beginnings and freedom. What makes you feel free and empowered? I know that it sounds paradoxical but, for me, freedom is best found within the boundaries of organization.

What do I mean by that? Well, think about water. When water flows without boundaries, such as when we spill a glass at the dinner table, it’s just a mess. It spreads everywhere and soaks everything in reach. But, when water has boundaries, such as the banks of a river, it becomes powerful. It changes things. It’s the boundaries of the Colorado River that allow the water to carve the Grand Canyon into the face of the earth.

Similarly, when we place boundaries in our own lives, we find the freedom that we need to live vibrantly, expressing our most authentic selves and achieving our greatest success. How many of these tips are you currently employing?

  1. Go to bed and get up at the same time each day. If you like to sleep in on the weekends, spend no more than one extra hour in bed.

  2. Commit to a one-hour morning R.E.V. Up daily. Spend 20 minutes each reading, exercise, and visualization.

  3. Set boundaries around your food consumption. Refuse to eat junk. Plan ahead so that you can pack your lunch and save money while giving your body the fuel it needs.

  4. Stop wasting mental energy trying to remember where you’re supposed to be and what you want to get done each day. Use a calendar. Make lists. If carrying a paper planner doesn’t work for you, learn to use the apps on your phone.

  5. Schedule your next appointment (hair, physical, dental cleaning) before you leave this one. It will be one fewer item on your to do list.

  6. Declutter your home and office environments. Set aside a weekend to truly “tidy” (pick up a copy of The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up- a truly amazing guide to decluttering life)  it will add hours every week to your life and you will feel much calmer as you move through your daily routine.  It’s so much easier to think in a clean space!
