Although it doesn’t feel much like spring here in New England, we recently passed the Vernal Equinox, more commonly known as the first day of spring. It is one of the two days of the year when the sun’s most direct rays fall on the equator. Sunrise and sunset are exactly 12 hours apart. That’s the science of the equinox, but it has a greater symbolic meaning. When day and night are equal, it reminds us to reflect on the aspects of our lives that are in balance, and where we have room for improvement.
When I’m in sync with nature, it is most apparent in my physical self. My diet, exercise, and sleep patterns are in balance, and I feel most comfortable in my body.
I remember once reading an essay about the different ways that we are untruthful with ourselves and underlining the words, “We lie to ourselves when we confuse pleasure with pain.” I thought YES! That’s something that so many of us do with food. We tell ourselves that we are “treating ourselves” when we eat junk food, but it’s really no treat at all. We enjoy a momentary taste sensation, but we pay a high price later. We suffer bloating, digestive issues, breakouts, and more. We feel best when we find balance in our diet plan, taking care of our bodies with lean proteins, whole grains, and colorful produce and allowing ourselves the occasional healthy treat. Think about it: do you feel better after inhaling whole bag of candy from the checkout aisle at the grocery store or savoring one perfect square of organic dark chocolate?
Once we find balance in our eating, we must seek balance in our exercise as well. For some of us, that means adding more gentle stretching or yoga. For others, it might mean joining a gym, enjoying more walks or hikes outside, or even taking up a new sport. Ask yourself what you need to do to bring more balance to your fitness routine – for a few people, it might even mean exercising less often or intensely.
Finally, between now and the Autumn Equinox, the other day each year when the days and nights are balanced, we experience more daylight and shorter nights. Many people will find themselves reinvigorated and enjoying a burst of creativity. Your need for a full night’s rest doesn’t change with the seasons. You must take some steps to ensure quality sleep. Give yourself the gift of a comfortable bed with the most luxurious linens, pillows, and blankets you can afford. Make your bedroom a screen-free zone. Get rid of the television and charge your phones in the hall. Prepare for sleep with reading or quiet music. Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day.
