Bring Something Healthy to Your Next Potluck Barbecue

Summer is the season for barbeques and other outdoor get-togethers. Our calendars fill so quickly this time of year and it seems that every weekend, we’re headed to another gathering. So often, when accepting an invitation, we ask the hostess what we can bring and, next thing we know, we’re stuck making something we don’t even want to eat. Instead, we can maintain our commitment to a healthy lifestyle by offering our hostess a few options “I would be happy to bring a large salad or veggie tray which would you prefer?”.

In reality, A few bags of baby carrots and a tub of organic hummus are no more difficult to grab and throw on a tray than a bag of corn chips and salsa, it’s a just a matter of readjusting our mindset. We can inspire our friends and family with delicious, simple to prepare (and digest) foods that they’ll actually enjoy eating.

Here are some great options for you to consider bringing to your next gathering:

  • Everyone is happy to find a big, beautiful green salad in the middle of the buffet. Keep it simple by making a salad of greens with one or two other items. Skip the store-bought salad dressing! They’re usually full of sugar. Instead, make a simple vinaigrette of 2 parts olive oil to one part lemon juice with a sprinkle of sea salt and a few grinds of black pepper. Whisk it together with just a dash of Dijon mustard to emulsify the dressing.

  • Create a platter of beautifully arranged cut seasonal fruit. On a budget? Fruit kebabs will be just as popular, but require less fruit to make a beautiful, full platter to display. Will there be lots of kids and teens at the party? Watermelon slices are always a big hit.

  • Soda and juice drinks are loaded with sugar or artificial sweeteners, both of which deplete your body. Bringing a variety of flavored seltzers or waters that you’ve infused with berries, lemon slices, or cucumber is a delicious alternative and a great way to hydrate during the summer months.
