If you are like most people (at least here in America), there are a few things that you probably consider necessary in order to be truly successful at the game of life. A beautiful home to enjoy, caring family and close friends to share it with, enough money to feel safe and secure, plenty of time for the recreational activities you love, and a career that makes you plenty of money doing something that truly resonates with you.
While the specific house, career, or recreational activity varies by individual, we all have our own idea of what “success” looks like. For most people, there are parts of the picture that do not look the way they want them to, and for some people, parts of the picture are missing altogether.
Most of the time this is because people don’t take the time to figure out exactly what their ideal picture actually looks like, they just know it isn’t what they currently have.
The first step is to decide what your own perfect life would look like if you had no parameters and no limits. In a previous post How to Shine in Your Life , I showed you a simple exercise to help you get a clearer vision of each area of life.
Once you have an idea of your ideal life vision, the next step is to take action toward the achievement of this vision, not just any action, new action. Something that is a step outside of your comfort zone. Most people are stuck in Comfort Zone City. They think something better would be nice but it would mean they would need to be uncomfortable and vulnerable for a little while. Taking new action is the only way to move in the direction of your ideal vision. If the comfortable patterns you are currently using were going to get you there, well...you would already be there.
I love this quote by Jessie Potter “If you always do what you’ve always done, you will always get what you’ve always gotten” and the similar quote often attributed to Albert Einstein “Insanity is repeating the same behavior over and over and expecting a different result”
What are some of the things you are stopping yourself from doing because they might be uncomfortable?
Asking for feedback in your business?
Doubling sales calls to get your income where you say you want it to be? Asking your partner to go to couples counseling?
Setting aside family time with zero tolerance for work creeping in?
All of theses things have one thing in common; they open us up to uncertainty and the potential for judgment or rejection.
So What? Is where you are so much better than feeling a little uncomfortable for a short time in order to achieve a new level of joy or success? Look for people who are already doing what you are envisioning for yourself. People who are high achievers are willing to put themselves out there in a way that others are not. They are willing to ask, ask, ask and try new things that make them uncomfortable in order to move in the direction of their dreams.
Your challenge for today...If you haven't already done the exercise, write down what your ideal life would look like for the areas below.
Don’t think too long, this should be the first thing that comes to mind.
Don’t put parameters on this either...this is your ideal picture not a “good enough” or "well I should be realistic" picture.
Now choose one of these areas and write down three action steps that are outside of your comfort zone. Something you don't already do or haven't already tried. Something new that can get you new results. Follow through on these 3 actions this week to move you in the direction you want to go. If it feels a little uncomfortable just remember...the life you have been waiting for is on the other side of your comfort zone. I'd love to hear about the steps you're taking toward your ideal life.
