How to Shine in Your Life

      One of the best ways I have found to help clients get to the place where they can truly shine in life, is to begin with determining what they have  preferences for, work out a vision for what an ideal life would look like for them, and begin the process of setting goals to attain these.  This may sound over simplified, but many people never take the time to figure out what they would prefer to be doing with their health, career, free time, relationships, etc. They just know they are not feeling fulfilled and joyful about their current situation. In the rush of daily to-dos, they don't know where to start.

     When I say "dream vacation", one person might envision taking a tour of all of Europe's most beautiful old cities, other people might think of climbing Mount Everest , all inclusive beach resorts, or shiny, ultra modern cities like Dubai. The reason everyone doesn't picture the same vacation is because we are all individuals with individual preferences that resonate with us for a reason. The key is to pay attention to what resonates with you, the things that make you excited to wake up in the morning, and then set the stage to attract those things into your life. The first characteristic of high achievers is that they have unusual clarity of purpose, mission, vision, values, goals and purpose.

     So, let's get a clear vision of your ideal life. Not the life you "should lead", YOUR ideal life. We can get there, we just need the map. The first step is to decide what you want. What does your ideal career look like? Don't put any parameters on this, this is an exercise to get you to think about what really resonates with you, makes you feel excited and strong ( and maybe a little scared). Think about your ideal health, wellbeing, and fitness. What would that look like for you , no one else's opinion comes into play here, this is your ideal. How would you feel, look, what would your energy level be?

Once you have written out your ideal vision for your health, career, relationships, recreation, and finances, we can back into these by determining what it would take to get there from where you are now. For example, if your goal is to have a closer relationship with your husband and children, write out what that would look like for your family.

It might be:

* leave work a little earlier once a week for special family dinner that everyone cooks together. 

* No electronics one night a week,  family game night to engage with each other.

* 1 family vacation a year

* 1 weekend a month with kids at a relative's house so you and your husband can be alone

* date night 2 times a month

 

Once you have a vision of what your ideal family time looks like you can begin to create goals around this and work to create this ideal vision in your reality. A goal is only a wish until it is written down. A goal with a date assigned to it is even more powerful.  

 

     This is a very simplified version of an exercise I do with my clients to help them begin to work toward their ideal life. You can cut and paste this chart and print it out or write it out on paper. There are multiple steps and complimentary exercises that work through with my clients to get this really fine tuned and actionable. However, even this simplified version can help you begin to see where you can make adjustments to move toward a more joyful life.

 

Take 15 minutes today to list out your ideal vision in each of these areas. Do not put parameters on these, this is what each area would look like if it were IDEAL not "pretty good"

Pick the most important one for you and commit to the three actions you wrote down. Any action, no matter how small will move you in the right direction so start now!
