Fuel for Better Productivity.
By now, we’ve all read plenty about the mind-body connection. You know it exists. You know it’s real. But do you know that you can actually improve your mental clarity by making healthier food choices?
When we make choices that diminish our physical wellbeing, whether by eating foods that take a toll on our bodies, foregoing proper sleep, or failing to set aside time for sufficient exercise, our mental state suffers. We feel lethargic. Our brains are foggy, causing us to run for more and more coffee each day to help us wake-up and focus.
We can make the choice to eat overly processed foods with little nutritional value and high sugar content that strain our resources and reduce our energy, or we can provide our bodies with foods that nourish and strengthen them. By giving our bodies real food for fuel we take back our power to enjoy a clearer mental state with which to set our goals. We also enjoy greater energy reserves to draw on as we take action to reach those goals. This can make more difference than most people realize, and very quickly, often within the first week.
What can you eat more of to increase energy and reduce brain-fog?
Organic Veggies should be the first thing on your list. Can’t get too many of these. They aid digestion, help to reduce inflammation (which often causes fatigue and brain-fog), are rich in minerals and vitamins, and fuel your body in the best possible way.
Berries- all kinds. They contain some of the highest levels of anti-oxidants of any foods (which protect our cells from damage), they are an excellent source of fiber, essential minerals, B vitamins, vitamin C and more.
Oatmeal - helps maintain healthy blood sugar levels. Reduces mid-day fatigue & helps you stay satiated longer to reduce sugar cravings.
Green tea – Matcha is the best form of green tea. It comes from baby leaves that are made into a powder so that you ingest the entire leaf, picked at its peak. You can brew a cup (make sure the water is just below boiling to avoid burning the tender leaves) or mix a spoonful into a smoothie or your salad dressing. Green tea has been shown to:
Increase Energy levels
Reduce atherosclerosis and risk of heart disease.
Lower blood pressure.
Reduce cholesterol levels.
Improve bone density.
Coconut oil - Pro-tip: Coffee has tons of antioxidants in it. If you enjoy a cup in the morning, add a spoonful of coconut oil or ghee to your mug. It will slow the absorption of the coffee and the release of caffeine for energy that will last longer without a crash.
What foods should I avoid?
My first tip...READ EVERY LABEL. Don’t mindlessly fill yourself with ingredients you don’t recognize. It makes me sad to say that many of us treat our material possessions much better than we treat this container we keep our spirit in. Your body is your true home and you deserve to have it be as useful and comfortable as it can possibly be.
Sugar is on the top of the list for foods to avoid if you want to feel clear and energetic. The amount an adult body should have in a day is 24 grams of sugar. Any one item with more that 8 grams should be avoided to feel your best.
If you want to go a step further:
These are the seven most common inflammation-causing foods. Of course not everyone will experience identical reactions, but I have my wellness clients eliminate these from their diet for 2 weeks as a great place to start. Once you have taken these 7 foods out for 2 weeks, you can add one at a time back in and see how you feel. All of my clients have reported feeling lighter, improved mental clarity, less bloating, and increased energy after 3 or 4 days without these foods. They didn’t even how good they could feel until they removed them. After the 2 weeks, add them back one at a time and pay attention to how you feel for a day or two before adding the next one. You may find that some of these do not bother you at all, in that case, you can add it back in and enjoy. As each one is added back (only one at a time), if you notice bloating, fatigue, upset stomach or breakouts, this is an indication that this food is inflammatory for you and is draining your energy:
Dairy (all milk products)
